July 18th: Single Release July 30th 2013

Nashville International to LAX:

It was late March when I arrived at the Nashville International Airport. I was heading off to LA to join my family for a road trip up Hwy 1… the “last” Peterson family vacation… you know since we’re “all growing up” and “starting our own lives.” Arriving at the self check-in, I attempt to log in a few different ways but eventually turn to the attendant. He feverishly pecks away at his keyboard for a few minutes, glances up at me and says, “Ahhh sir, there isn’t a Griffin Peterson on the 6pm flight to L.A.” This is never good… thirty minutes later we realize my flight was accidently booked on the same date, only a month earlier! Hmmm… a costly and untimely mistake.

I race through security and arrive at my gate, just in time to board the plane. Of course, I’m the last seat, last row, back of the plane…sometimes life hands you lemons. Even though I’m a little flustered, I’m grateful to be on the plane.

I need to enter a happy place so I put my ear buds in to jam out. I’m taking in the scene around me. There’s a guy to the left of me at the window seat, and it becomes obvious his friend is the guy across the aisle, stretched out across all three seats wearing a foot cast. Since I was now in their way, they have to lean around me to chat. My obvious thought, “Oh great, I get to hear this conversation all the way to LA ” But, right before I click my tunes up to block them out I hear one of them say “Idol”. This piques my attention… hmmm, music down two notches. Then I hear “Idol” again. “Hey man”, says the dude with the cast, “sorry we’re talking through you right now”! I tell him “no problem”, but since I was on the show this past season the mention of “Idol” was too intriguing not to ask.

So here’s the lemonade… I ask, and the guy with the walking cast is Jerry Flowers, professional bass player and a member of Keith Urban’s band! So, I casually introduce myself, mentioning that I was on this season of Idol. Then Jerry explains that he’s on his way to play on the show with Keith the next night. We chat for a while and the awesome guy that he is, he asks to hear some of my music. I happen to have my laptop so I show him my stuff. Here’s a scary moment… he puts his ear buds in and turns it up… after the first song he looks up at me and smiles, “This is bad ass man!”

It just seems totally surreal… I’m losing it at 30,000 feet! Of course with his experience and obvious credibility I can’t hide my smile while I try to keep whatever is left of my cool. He listens to another song and likes it even more than the first! Eventually we land and he asks me to send him all the songs I have. We agree to get together and write when we get back to Nashville. What just happened?

Fast forward a month and I’m writing with Jerry in his studio. Still hard to believe! The first writing session blew my mind. I realize that not only is Jerry an amazing bassist, guitarist and pianist, but he really has an ear for production. I have been writing and recording since January in preparation to release my EP, so it seems obvious that I ask Jerry to produce the EP with me. Even though he is extremely busy writing songs and playing in Keith Urban’s band, he agrees!

By now you may have guessed that for the past month I have been in the studio with Jerry Flowers and
Nick Steele recording and preparing for the release of my debut EP titled “Getaway”.

I am so pumped to have finished the first single from the EP, titled “Makes Me Hold On to You”, which will be released July 30th on iTunes and Amazon. Mark your calendar!

Check in next week…for another equally crazy encounter involving the super talented NYT bestselling author
Colleen Hoover. Anyone score a copy of Losing Hope?

P.S. I gotta thank
Okay Creations. for the awesome single cover artwork!

November 6th: "Set Me Free" Video and Single Releasing November 18th!

When you write something from the heart, it is a piece of you exposed. The more real it becomes, the scarier it can be to reveal it but the words or feelings need to be freed. This is how "Set Me Free" came to be. I was lucky enough to link up with some crazy talented friends and show them this song. Jake Brusha and Marc Mellens are these talented dudes and together we planned, built props and shot this video in about two weeks! They did an amazing job creating the video's story around the song and directing it. We filmed it all in Oconomowoc, WI in October. I can not describe how amazing the process was and working with these guys was incredible. The video and song are going to release November 18th.. I can't wait to get this out there.
